Numbering 80, there
are more grizzlies in Banff Park than there are black bears. Signs like
these were common around the Moraine Lake area, near Lake Louise. A local
grizzly had become "aggressive" and the use of some trails was
limited to groups of six or more closely-bunched hikers. We
were walking in the woods about a mile from the hotel one day, and had
to turn around because the area was posted "off limits" due
to another bear sighting.
Black bears have actually been seen roaming the streets
of downtown Banff at night. We saw two of them, in different locations,
along the roadside late one afternoon.
